Laminate flooring is a popular alternative to expensive and hard-to-maintain hardwood. With the same look and feel as their dearer counterpart, does this mean they should be cleaned in the same way? The answer is no. Laminate flooring needs special care when it comes to maintenance and cleaning as unlike hardwood, the surface cannot be refinished in the event of stains or damage. Here are our top tips for maintaining your laminate flooring.

1.Read the instructions

All flooring is slightly different, so make sure you read the cleaning instructions your laminate flooring came with, each brand may have slightly different recommendations. Most brands have detailed tips and tricks on their website, so be sure to check them out.

2. Mop up any spills immediately

Due to the main component of laminate flooring being wood, any spills should be wiped up immediately to avoid the liquid getting past the plastic topcoat and onto the wood underneath, which could cause it to warp and the plank to lift.

3. Don’t use anything abrasive

Laminate flooring is easily scratched, so you should avoid using abrasive products or tools when cleaning it. Use a soft bristle brush or a vacuum cleaner without a rotating brush to clean up debris without damaging the laminate.

4. Protect the floors to prevent further damage

Use furniture pads under the legs of pieces of furniture that are often moved about like chairs. This will stop micro-scratches appearing on the laminate flooring and ruining their shine. Also ensure you have entrance mats for guests to wipe their feet on to prevent dirt from damaging or staining the floor.

5. Use a mop to clean the floor

To keep laminate flooring clean and fresh, mop with a damp microfibre mop every couple of months. Water should get up any marks, but if you’re looking to do a deep clean, make sure you use a cleaner that specifically states its suitability for laminate flooring. Alternatively, vinegar can be used.
